Are you an ex-member of the Armed Forces or merchant navy?
Shropshire Council has recently been awarded gold status in the Armed Forces Covenant’s employer recognition scheme, as Clive has mentioned in his piece this month. The scheme encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same. Criteria for the award includes supporting employment of ex-service people. To highlight the benefits of employing ex-service people, we are appealing for volunteers to share their story of the transition from working for the Armed Forces to employment at Shropshire Council. If you worked for the Armed Forces and would like to get involved, please contact email@example.com.
We’re also looking for staff or relatives of staff who have served in the merchant navy to help us celebrate Merchant Navy day on 1 September 2017. A flag-raising ceremony will take place outside Shirehall at 9.30am, and we’d encourage all former merchant navy people, or anyone with a particular interest in the merchant navy to attend.
Staff newsletter feedback
We want to say a big thank you to all staff that completed our newsletter feedback survey. The information gathered has given us useful insight as to what is working well and how we can improve.
Special congratulations to Nanette Brown, who was picked at random from all our respondents, to win a family ticket to Shrewsbury Museum.
Heritage Open days
In celebration of Heritage Open Days, Shropshire Museums and Archives are waiving entry fees and putting on special events to create a unique visitor experience. Running from Thursday 7 September until Sunday 10 September, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, Shrewsbury Castle, Shropshire Archives and Acton Scott Historic Working Farm are each offering free entry and special events to visitors.
Charity Quiz Night
On 19 July Darren Edwards, Jo Oliver and John Skelton from HR held a charity quiz evening for Strength Through Adversity. The charity, founded by Darren Edwards following a climbing accident, aims to improve opportunities for disabled people to take part in sport in Shropshire. The quiz night raised a fantastic £687, which has put a huge dent in Darren’s fundraising target of £5,000.
The team are also running in the Birmingham half and full marathon in October 2017 and are looking for volunteers. If you would like to be part of the running team please contact firstname.lastname@example.org who will happily advise on how you can get involved.
