Apprenticeship Levy – what does it mean for council staff?
As a larger employer, Shropshire Council, including schools, will be subject to the government’s new Apprenticeship Levy starting in April 2017. The aim of the Apprenticeship Levy is simple: to have a more skilled workforce in the UK. Despite the name, the money allocated to the levy will not only be for new apprentices - it can be used for a wide range of training and development opportunities for our current staff too.
Malcolm Pate, leader of Shropshire Council, said:
“This is an opportunity to provide training and improve services in Shropshire Council and across our schools. It's important, in these financially difficult times, that we're smart about how we spend these funds, but I'm confident that we can invest in learning that will benefit our staff and ultimately our customers. In addition to using this levy to upskill our own workforce, we're looking to provide chances for local businesses to both deliver and receive training, supporting our aim to grow a prosperous economy in Shropshire.”
The council's Apprenticeship Levy team has been working on a strategy for the best use of these funds. They've been considering a national database of existing and planned courses, as well as developing a localised version.
