Virtual Full Council yesterday
Yesterday we held our first ever virtual Full Council meeting – following last week’s first virtual Cabinet meeting - and we’re really pleased with how well it went. It was a special meeting, held simply to ensure that councillors don’t breach the rule that says they can no longer be councillors if they fail to attend a meeting for six months. initial comments have been very positive and we’re not aware of any major problems. Thank you to all colleagues and councillors who helped to make the meeting possible and helped it run smoothly.
Recycling centres now open
All five of our household recycling centres re-opened on Tuesday, and are open from 9am to 5pm every day for essential visits only, with a number of restrictions in place to ensure the health and safety of site staff and visitors. So far the opening has gone smoothly, and we want to thank our waste team, and Veolia, for this. We’ll continue to monitor the situation, especially over the bank holiday weekend. You can find out more on our website.
The Great Virtual Bake Off – the winners!
Firstly a huge thank you to everyone that took part in this year’s Bake Off. It’s the first time that we’ve run a virtual one and we had a fantastic response, with more than 60 entries, including sponge cakes, cupcakes, birthday cakes, scones, bread and more. We really do have lots of talented bakers working for the council!
With so many brilliant entries it’s fair to say that picking a winner was no easy task, but many congratulations to our winner Sophie Ewan-Roberts for her fantastic Millennium Falcon brownie, baked to mark May 4th, Star Wars Day!
It was lovely that some of you had involved your children, and great that many of you were inspired by your team members. Many of you baked cakes for a family member’s birthday – so many happy returns to all who have celebrated a ‘lockdown birthday’ in the past few weeks.
We really enjoyed seeing your photos and reading your supporting words - the only disappointment was that we weren’t able to taste your entries!

VE Day – 75th anniversary commemorations
You’ll already be aware, but tomorrow is the 75th anniversary of VE Day. There’s loads of things you can do to remember and celebrate from the safety of your own home with your families, children, partners and online such as the Nation’s Toast.
Whatever you choose to do, please do share with us by emailing email@example.com. We’d love to see!
It would also be great to hear of any WW2 family stories with photos so if you’re happy sharing, send to the communications team also! Here is Council Leader Peter Nutting’s WW2 story.
